Dealing with Fecal Incontinence

Dealing with Fecal Incontinence

BOOK APPOINTMENT
Fecal incontinence is the inability to control bowel movements. It can happen to anyone. Constipation, diarrhea, aging, and childbirth can all cause this embarrassing condition. A sudden and uncontrollable need to go can happen without warning. Sometimes you don’t even have time to make it to a toilet.

While it is an embarrassing problem, it is important not to be shy about talking with Dr. Davidson about your problem. With treatment, you can improve your condition and get back to a regular, healthy lifestyle without unpleasant surprises.

If you’re diagnosed with fecal incontinence, your treatment will depend upon the cause of the issue. Anti-diarrheal drugs or bulk laxatives may be given. Injectable bulking agents may also be placed directly into the anal cavity. Dietary changes, such as adding more fiber, can make a difference for many people.

Other therapies, such as biofeedback, bowel training, and nerve stimulation have been shown to be helpful. If the cause is sphincter damage, as can happen with childbirth, or rectal prolapse, a surgical treatment may be used. There are several different procedures available, and some may be more suited to your case than others.

Fecal incontinence can come with other issues. Some, like diarrhea or constipation, may be contributing factors. You may experience gas and bloating and skin irritation in the area. Alongside physical complications, you may experience emotional distress. Aside from the embarrassment, the worry caused by not knowing why this is happening or how to address it can be extremely stressful.

If you are suffering from fecal incontinence, please don’t be shy. The sooner you talk to Dr. Davidson, the sooner you can get treated and get back to a regular, healthy lifestyle.
