Constipation

BOOK APPOINTMENT

Constipation involves having bowel movement less than 3 times per week.  The bowel movements themselves may be very dray, hard, and small in size. Constipation occurs due to the following reasons:

  • Lack of fluids
  • Overuse of specific laxatives
  • Fiber deficiency
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Iron pills or medicine with constipation side effects

Patients experience multiple symptoms during constipation, this can include small bowl, hard, dry bowel movements, long times between bowel movements, and the feeling of a full or bloated bowel. If you are affected, you can treat constipation by drinking more fluids, adding more fiber to your diet, increasing physical activity, and not delaying bowel movements.

Treatment

Laxatives can be an option for short-term relief. Fiber supplements such as Metamucil or Citrucel can be beneficial, but in some cases, they may worsen constipation. Ask your healthcare provider if any medicines may be causing constipation. Notify your healthcare provider if constipation occurs or if you have, bouts of diarrhea, pain during bowel movements, and weight loss.

To improve your condition, eat fresh vegetables and fruit, perform regular exercise, drink fluids, increase whole-grain fiber in your diet, and avoid using laxatives which can cause liquid bowel movement.
