What is Colonoscopy?

A colonoscopy involves examining the large intestine with a small flexible tube. The purpose of this process is to evaluate and detect abnormal growths, ulcers, and inflamed tissue. It can also be helpful for screening for rectal and colon cancer. Dr. Davidson is a specialist located in Beverly Hills who helps patients evaluate their intestine with colonoscopy.

Instructions

Before the procedure, the colon must be completely empty and clean. This involves using a high amount of special cleaning or diet of clear liquids. The doctor or staff member must be informed of any medications you are taking. This includes aspirin, arthritis, medications, blood thinners, vitamins containing iron, or diabetes medicines.

You may need to arrange for a friend or family member to help transport you home after the procedure. Upon the start of the colonoscopy, you will lie on your side or back. A sedative will be used to loosen your nerves and help you relax. During the process, a flexible tube is inserted through the rectum and maneuvered through the colon. It obtains and creates live images of your colon, which are transmitted to a bedside TV screen.

Colonoscopy can range from anywhere between 15 minutes to 1 hour to complete. Once the process has completed, the colonoscope is removed and the bowel is examined. You will remain at the facility to rest until the effects of the sedative diminishes. On the next day, you should be fully recovered from the procedure.
