What is an EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy)?

BOOK APPOINTMENT
EGD (Esophagogastroduodenoscopy), also known as an upper endoscopy, is a procedure that allows the doctor to view the lining of the esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine (duodenum). At David Song GI, this procedure is used to diagnose and treat various conditions, including:

  • Chronic Heartburn (GERD)
  • Unexplained Abdominal Pain
  • Swallowing Difficulties
  • Persistent Nausea or Vomiting
  • Gastric Ulcers or Inflammation
  • Esophageal Strictures

How EGD Works

During the EGD, a thin, flexible tube with a camera (endoscope) is inserted through the mouth to provide clear images of the upper digestive tract. This procedure is minimally invasive and typically takes about 15-30 minutes. Patients are usually sedated to ensure comfort and minimize any discomfort.

Benefits of EGD

  • Early Detection of Conditions: EGD can help detect issues like ulcers, gastritis, or even early signs of cancer.
  • Biopsy Capability: If necessary, tissue samples can be taken for further analysis, aiding in accurate diagnosis.
  • Therapeutic Uses: It can also treat certain conditions, such as removing polyps, dilating narrow areas, or stopping bleeding.

Preparing for Your EGD

Your provider will give you instructions on how to prepare for your EGD. You’ll typically be told to stop eating solid food for eight hours and stop drinking liquids for four hours before the procedure. This is important to ensure your stomach is empty. You’ll also need to stop taking certain blood-thinning medications before the procedure to decrease the risk of bleeding. Tell your provider about any medications and supplements you’re taking, especially if you have heart disease, diabetes, or high blood pressure, so they can plan ahead.

After Your EGD

Most patients receive a sedative to relax them during the EGD procedure. Afterwards, while the sedative wears off, your memory, judgment, and reaction times may be impaired, even if you feel mentally alert. Arrange for someone to drive you home, and take the day off work if possible.
